Birds of Charleston Lake Take the time to enjoy the many waterfowl and woodland birds on and around Charleston Lake

LOONS

Twice a year, Dwayne Struthers and Katie Barker conduct a loon / chick count. In 2024, we had 42 adult loons and 7 chicks.

As well, Dwayne and Jeff Roddick have built and maintained 7 loon rafts at different locations around the lake.

In 2024, CLEA engaged wildlife photographer Joshua Burch to equip our loon nesting rafts with remote cameras.  This has allowed us to observe a loon family through its seasonal cycle.

Peregrine Falcons

Peregrine falcons were reintroducted to Charleston Lake from 2001 – 2005 in a joint project by CLEA, The Leeds County Stewardship Council and The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Merlin Falcons

An injured merlin falcon was found and brought to Sandy Pines for rehabitation.  A month later, this falcon, and two friends, were released at the same location on Charleston Lake.  The following year, it returned to nest.
